Femmes Fatales

That seamstress, "the famous Coco Chanel was contemptuously described by her contemporary Paul Poiret. He attacked her for being a woman, but in fact he saw her as a big competitor. Times have changed. Never before have there been so many female designers at the head of a fashion house as currently. A perfect moment for an exhibition in which strong women in fashion are central. Femmes Fatales is the first exhibition in fashion history that is entirely devoted to female designers. Do they design differently for women than their male colleagues? What is their influence? What does being a woman mean for their creations? And what is their vision of fashion? There is work by Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli, Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood, Sonia Rykiel, Miuccia Prada, Maria Gracia Chiuri (Dior), Dutch greats such as Fong Leng, Sheila de Vries and Iris van Herpen and many others.

Florence trip, Gucci garden

During my stay in florence, I visited Gucci garden. The House debuts the Gucci Garden inside the historic Palazzo della Mercanzia, which housed the Gucci Museo. Conceived by creative director Alessandro Michele, the newly designed space features a store with one-of-a-kind items, the Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura— a restaurant by three-Michelin-star chef—and the Gucci Garden Galleria exhibition rooms curated by critic Maria Luisa Frisa.

Florence trip, Palazzo pitti

We have also paid a visit to Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Purchased in 1550, the Palace was chosen by Cosimo I de’ Medici and his wife Eleanor of Toledo as the new Grand Ducal residence, and it soon became the new symbol of the Medici’s power over Tuscany. It was also the royal palace of other two dynasties: the House of Lorraine-Habsburg (which succeeded the Medici from 1737) and the Kings of Italy of the House of Savoy, who inhabited it from 1865.

Nonetheless the palace still bears the name of its first owner, the Florentine banker Luca Pitti that in the mid-1400s started its construction – maybe  after a design by Brunelleschi – at the foot of the Boboli hill beyond the Arno river.

Today the Palace is divided into four museums: the Treasury of the Grand Dukes on the ground floor, the Palatine Gallery and the Royal and Imperial Apartments on the first floor, the Modern Art Gallery and the Museum of Costume and Fashion on the second floor. From 8th January to 5th May 2019 the new exhibition "Animalia Fashion".

Animalia Fashion, running until May 5,explores the cross between contemporary haute-couture and the animal kingdom, with its vast variety of colours, patterns and shapes. Dresses stand like veritable sculptures, while fabrics and embroideries are treated like nature-instilled paintings, each one drawing inspiration from the world of animals through the use of motifs and, at times, the animals themselves.
